I originally made up this recipe for the sole purpose of garnishing my Orange Cinnamon Spice Scones. If you haven't tried them yet, go ahead and make this recipe along with the candied oranges. These taste great alone, but I personally love them as a garnish. Cocktails, scones, orange Julius cake, so many options. They freeze well too, so you can make a whole batch and pull slices out whenever you think of a reason to eat one. This recipe unintentionally results in a delicious orange syrup that you can save to pour over pancakes, waffles, scones, tarts, danishes, drizzled over yogurt, in cocktails, to sweeten drinks, etc. I love recipes that don't waste any ingredients or time!
Candied Orange Slices and Orange Syrup
Makes 1 orange worth of slices. About 1 cup of syrup +/-
Prep time: 12 minutes
Total time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Ingredients
1 orange
1 cup of water
1 cup of sugar
bowl of ice water
Directions
Thinly slice the oranges into rounds.
Add water to a pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Add orange slices and boil for two minutes.
Scoop orange slices and plunge them into the ice water.
Bring the water on the stove back to a boil. Stir in the sugar and stir it in.
When sugar is dissolved place the orange slices back in the boiling sugar water.
Turn the heat down and cover, simmering for 1 hour. Stir occasionally to keep them from sticking together or the bottom.
After 1 hour, set orange slices on a wire rack and let sit for about 24 hours. I let mine rest in the cool oven to avoid bugs and dust.
Package and eat within 1 week in the fridge, or freeze.
